“I feel like I’m going to puke.” My head whipped around to peep the third row of our boat-sized Yukon XL. We had purchased this vehicle only days before to accommodate our family of six, specifically for this long weekend road trip. I could only see the Oldest Child (OC) covering his mouth and looking pale as a ghost.

And that’s when the overpriced scrambled eggs we’d had for lunch started making their way back out of him. My daughter, the baby of the bunch, was nestled next to him in the third row and managed to get caught up in the “spray.” We pulled over, and the children spewed out of the vehicle (pun intended) to make room for OC to finish what he started on the shoulder of the road.

And I’ve learned a lot over the last year. It hasn’t been all sunshine and rainbows. I’m sharing the top three things I’ve learned this first year of us living together.

Before I start, let me say I’m not okay with the word “fat,” but in this context, I’m making light of the parallels between my blended family and the culture…
