My First Un-Christmas was a Disaster Turned Miracle

“Jesus is the reason for the season,” my Mom always said.

Unlike Forest Gump’s mama, this wasn’t a nugget of wisdom for me to ponder for the rest of my life. No, this was my mother’s response when I asked her why my brothers could open presents on my birthday, and I didn’t get any on theirs.

Despite my many attempts to get a holiday called Kristimas trending, I eventually accepted that when you’re born on Christmas Day (like me), you get used to your birthday not being about you.

I also learned to accept that when you grow up in the Snow Belt, inclement weather is always threatening to ruin your plans. And this Christmas, without fail, Mother Nature showed us again that she’s 100% That Bitch.

And that’s where we’ll start for this Un-Christmasy Holiday.

What’s an Un-Christmas, and Do I Want One?!

My aspiration wasn’t to have an “Un-Christmas” this year. In my mind, I kept referring to it as an “Adult Christmas.” All I really wanted, though, was the exact opposite of last year.

In 2021, like many others, I had a COVID Christmas. I was turning 40 and potentially marking this milestone alone…
